7/25/03 - Little Dee is the "top secret" project I've been hinting at for the last year. The daily strip I hope to syndicate or self-syndicate.
But first I will tell you the reasons for all this change of plans, and secondly, I will give you further details of Little Dee.
Basically, recently I've pushed myself too hard and have fallen apart a fair bit and need a vacation. Two weeks ago I was really pushing it to pack everything I own and get ready for San Diego Comic-Con including getting ahead on Bruno. And then the Convention itself ended up being surprisingly taxing on me, I just didn't do so well emotionally there. And I came back and now I'm about to move to Olympia, WA in a little over a week, and I was trying to get ahead on Bruno, and emotionally trying to catch up on some other things in my life. And I'd even written the next two weeks of Brunos, but today I just fell apart. Even I know my breaking point, and although this spring has been difficult for me, it is finally now that I've reached the "point." And I know well enough to take care of myself when needed.
So, Bruno will return September 1st, and I'll hopefully be refreshed and ready for it.
Now, Little Dee. I created the first version of Little Dee last summer and submitted it to the syndicates. They turned it down, although they all gave me much encouragement. I redeveloped it this winter and spring, including adding backgrounds, and am just preparing it for another attempt with the syndicates. But I truly believe in this strip as both a strip I can love and feel proud of, as well as make a living off of. I love all the other strips I've done for the syndicates, but this is the first I've truly believe in. And so my plan is that even if the syndicates turn it down, I will try and self-syndicate. I was hoping to do that in the early autumn, but my finances are so shoddy, I will likely go back to work full-time and be able to afford to release it in the spring.
Posted here, the first six strips will be ones that were in the original submission, but which were "story building" strips, and therefore cut from the re-do (reasoning: a comic strip is either a soap opera like "Doonesbury" or "Bruno", or it is a fairly static world). After that you will see twenty-six strips which comprise the re-developed strip.
Anyhow, I hope you all have a good August, whether vacationing or whatever you have planned. During this time I will not be keeping up with emails hardly at all. As I noted above, if you wish, you can comment on Dee here (or via email, I just likely will not get to respond). Next week I will be moving to Olympia, and then spending three weeks camping in SW Canada with Bethanne. I will only be bringing drawing stuff along for doodles, not having to do with any project, Bruno, Little Dee, or otherwise. Maybe I'll draw some picture of trees and clouds. Maybe of Bethanne. I'll probably lay about a bit. Try to feel like a human being for a bit.
