  1. I see eyes in the water.

I don’t think Julie had any choice once she put the bomb on the creature. The bomb was armed and she had no time to save the monster and talk to it to get its side of the story. She may want to talk to Fire or Dirt before blowing them up. But first she should talk to Gorro about a few things he hasn’t been telling her.

  2. Two thoughts: First, this water Yontengu is operating in the desert. By definition, deserts lack water. Ergo, is this Yontengu serving an environmentally essential purpose in periodically re-hydrating the landscape?

Second, is this a modern re-imagining of Sandro Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus”? Or perhaps the Phoenix rising again? Or maybe Superman?

  3. Yes guys, those are kind of the things I’ve been thinking about this story…

Like Phill Collins said in that song: “We always need to hear both sides of the story”.

  4. @Muzhik: It’s not *wrong* for a desert to exist. It’s bad for people in general if arable land turns into arid land, but the desert is an ecosystem in its own right.

  5. She might have been able to pull the explosive off, and that’s just the water plume from the detonation.
The water creature could be very useful in an arid environment if it can control it’s output of water, and apparently being intelligent raises that possibility.
As to the eyes in the water, maybe they are from the previously separated heads, or it extended them to watch her and are not flotsam.
As to what’s so bad about the tengu flooding the town in the desert, that’s easy. Flooding anywhere is bad, even more so if inhabitants have no preparations for such an event.
