In one of the bedrooms on the ship, locked in, Thoos and Picknar talk as Rodrigo and Knoz lay unconscious on a bed. Picknar said, “put in the brig for “our” safety. What a bunch of jerks. Now there’s nothing to do but waste time.” Thoos said, “well, since we have time, you mentioned you’d been married. What’s your story, Picknar?” Picknar said, “their name was Ghaeilf. we’d met as teens. my parents hated Ghaeilf because my parents were conservative and Ghaeilf wasn’t. But it couldn’t prevent our love. But then Ghaeilf contracted a rare illness, and on their deathbed they confessed they’d gambled once or twice. They said they hadn’t mentioned it out of shame and embarrassment. But, come to find out, Ghaeilf had gambled a lot. And so, soon after Ghaeilf passed, debt collectors took our home. And due to my grief, I stopped taking care of myself, including eating decently or showering, and I lost my job in the mines.” Thoos said, “see? It’s poor people who chose to screw up their lives, but then they complain about the rich. I just don’t get it.” Picknar said, “I know, what an inexplicable mystery, right?”
