12/13/24 – Ghaeilf

|

In one of the bedrooms on the ship, locked in, Thoos and Picknar talk as Rodrigo and Knoz lay unconscious on a bed. Picknar said, "put in the brig for "our" safety. What a bunch of jerks. Now there's nothing to do but waste time." Thoos said, "well, since we have time, you mentioned you'd been married. What's your story, Picknar?" Picknar said, "their name was Ghaeilf. we'd met as teens. my parents hated Ghaeilf because my parents were conservative and Ghaeilf wasn't. But it couldn't prevent our love. But then Ghaeilf contracted a rare illness, and on their deathbed they confessed they'd gambled once or twice. They said they hadn't mentioned it out of shame and embarrassment. But, come to find out, Ghaeilf had gambled a lot. And so, soon after Ghaeilf passed, debt collectors took our home. And due to my grief, I stopped taking care of myself, including eating decently or showering, and I lost my job in the mines." Thoos said, "see? It's poor people who chose to screw up their lives, but then they complain about the rich. I just don't get it." Picknar said, "I know, what an inexplicable mystery, right?"

It’s just like Romeo and Juliet, except after Rome dies, Juliet wakes up and survives and has a lot of gambling debt and mysteriously has her consciousness transferred to an alien on another planet.

Humans are known for their tenacity and drive. The rich might have needed both, once.. but their children won’t, or their children’s children. They will never want for anything again.

So, they’re not completely human. They’re not seeing to the needs of themselves and their families, anymore. They’re all about making sure that they get *ALL* the money and they don’t care if you and yours die, as long as numbers go up.

Do not underestimate the capacity of the wealthy and privileged to assess and judge the poor as a personal problem — personal to their circumstances for being poor, and their poverty aimed personally at the wealthy and privileged. From this comes all manner of terror and crime no civilized society would tolerate. This is why, in the end, the wealthy and privileged would rather see the world burn to ashes than so much as let the poor eat cake. They figure they can always rebuild. And that this time, the poor will disappear on their own.
