08/16/24 – Portrait Gallery

|

On their way out of the library, Picknar looked through a doorway and said, "the library has a portrait gallery? Who are the portraits of?" Rodrigo said, "no one famous, although a few are historic locals. Would you like to see?" Smiling, Picknar said, "sure. I want to get off-planet, but while here, I'm curious." Utterly uninterested, Jo walked away and said, "good lord. I'm off to the potty then. Don't leave without me." Entering the gallery, Rodrigo said, "it's a pretty average collection, all painted by hand with brush and pigment. Mostly done before the camera was invented. Although these ones are recent." Looking at the recent ones, specifically one of a lizard dressed in historic garb, Picknar said, "I didn't realize there were other sentient species on your planet. Your species seems a little slow, no offense. No doubt these are the great ones who invented technology and who will eventually propel your people into space?" Reading the description of the painting, Rodrigo said, "actually, this is the pet section of the portrait gallery. This one appears to be of someone's lizard, a uromastix to be precise, named Lazy. Mostly it spends its life naked a rock sunning under a heat lamp." Picknar said, "see? Definitely more intelligent."

I’m having a really fun time writing this scene. All the people and animals in the scene are from a Kickstarter level for the last book, so I get to make up ridiculous stories for ALL of them. Fun!
