05/27/24 – A Sweet Thing

|

Picknar, Rodrigo, and Thoos are driving in Val's car, with Picknar behind the wheel. Rodrigo said, "you're getting better at driving, Picknar. You haven't scraped against a single thing this time." A little disturbed, Picknar said, "I just don't understand why all these walking people keep entering our driving lane." The three enter Audri's apartment, and are greeted by her cat Purrloin, who said, "meow?" Picknar knelt down and pet Purrloin and said, "awww." Thoos said, "what a sweet thing!" Looking at Purrloin's collar, Rodrigo said, "it looks like you have a cat after all. named Purrloin. Won't Knox be joyful to know." Purrloin hissed at Thoos, who stood up and said, "hrm. although she doesn't seem to like me very much." Rodrigo said, "maybe she's feeling spiteful that you took over her mistress's body." Annoyed and pointing at Purrloin, Audri said, "well, cat, I don't care. And just so you know, I can out-spite you any day of the week." Hands on his hips, Rodrigo said, "yup, this definitely is the first time you've met a cat."

Maybe Rodrigo should mention what crosswalks are.

Oh, you can out-spite a cat if you have sufficient energy and concentration. What you will not be able to prepare against is the counterattack, which will come at a time of the cat’s own choosing and against a target upon your flesh at the cat’s whim. That, you cannot counter. I don’t care how long your fingernails are. And neither does the cat.

“Hands on his hips …” Christopher! How did you miss the opportunity to use the lovely phrase “Arms akimbo…” here?

The adjective has always sounded to me as though derived from an African language, but I learned today that it comes from the Middle English kenebowe.
