05/22/24 – Rock-A-Bye Baby

|

Still standing in front of Mateo's Pub, Picknar said, "anyhow, they scan for the universal s.o.s. tune, which all members use which goes like this. Hmm hmm hmm hmm hmmmm... hmm hmm hmm hm..." Knox looks personally affronted by this, and then says the lyrics to the song as it is known on earth, "rock-a-bye bayyyyby... in the tree top... It's one of the most well-known children's lullabies on earth." Rodrigo adds, "my mother used to sing me to sleep with Puccini's 'O Mio Babbino Caro.'" Putting their hand to their forehead, Picknar said, "but... but... crap. then there's nothing left to do than to build our own communication device that will reach further than most of the earth's network noise." Throwing their arms up in excitement, Thoos said, "oh, I can help. I built one as a kid." Picknar asked, "great. Do you remember how?" Counting off the items on their fingers, Thoos said, "of course. First what you do is order a communication device kit." Annoyed, Picknar said, "you do realize that doesn't help our situation, right?" Excited now, and onto their second finger, Thoos said, "and then it's a just a matter of having your personal butler follow the colorful pictures in the instructions."

I swear I pre-established the “Rock-a-bye-baby” thing in the 3rd series, but I can’t seem to find it. Hrm.

Typically, family fortunes only last a few generations. After just a few, you end up with either id10ts, or wastrels with no practical experience.

The Rockefellers got lucky, but even the Senator isn’t increasing the family fortune I suspect.

I have to say one of my favourite parts of these comics is the “completely unhinged talking face” like in the last panel. You know whatever they are saying is mental and I love it.

I remembered the distress call tune as “Twinkle, twinkle little star” but that’s probably yet-another-instance of poor recall as I age. Oh well, here’s another excuse for an archive trawl.

For what it’s worth, I’ve sometimes gone back into prior stories certain I’d find a reference, device, personality or memorable line I was sure I used and stuck in there, and only occasionally discovered the place where it should have been… and then recalled I had changed it, or it had morphed into a later device or person or line, or, most maddening of all, I had begun to imagine it, but had written and moved on with the story without bothering to actually put the idea in a more-permanent format. I’d imagined a ghost, and it was not there when I came back for it.

I’ve since learned that I apparently rewrite former passages or scenes in my head, and these are the ones I remember — not the actual written text. And I don’t remember the rewriting process. It simply happens as I think I’m remembering what I’d put down. I need a term for this invisible, immemorable form of remembrance editing. Paracreation? No, that’s not it.
