btw, the last line of the previous strip “I’m beginning to think that space is where one should want to be. To actually get a little peace and relaxation” was a lead-up to this one’s first panel. I usually don’t carry-over lines like that, I try to keep each strip largely standalone, but I’ve been branching out, you know?

Val and Audri, in the bodies of Picknar and Thoos respectively, ran pell-mell from the authorities shooting laser guns at them. Audri said, “aaauuugghhhhhh!” Val said, “aaaiieeeeeee!!!!” And then Val said, “hurry, Audr!! They’re done raiding the lab, and now they’re after us! We need to figure out a way to escape them! Focus!” Audri said, “I wish I could, but my Adderall is back on earth.” They began running down some stairs, until Audri stopped and mused, “Actually, maybe this brain isn’t broken like my other brain. I wonder if I still even need my adhd meds.” Val grabbed her arm and yanked her forward to keep running. Val said, “trust me, you do.”

Audri is spacing in space when the situation has left no space for that. No wonder Val is frantic.
I’m fond of ironic scene changes in my writing. A complaint for peace that transitions to violence and danger. A placid assessment of the known situation contrasted with an undetected attempt to change it for the worse. Or one of my favorites: An innocent phrase that changes meaning in a different and far more lethal environment. I’ve come to expect such little tricks in my reading. You go, Christopher.
That’s not the authorities, it’s the professor. He wants to cover up his mistake, and avoid paying the generous fee.
