As the alarm went off in Festus Loomp’s lab with a “reeyuu! Reeyuu!” And more laser zaps hit other parts of the room, Loom yelled in frustration. “gahhh! A raid! Not now. Not now!” Loomp ran over to Thoos and Picknar and said, “listen, I’m sorry to do this, but you have to go. This experiment is totally illegal.” Loomp pointed down a hallway and said, “down there is the back exit. Run! I’ll lure them away. It’s me they want.” Feeling thoughtful, Loomp added, “after what I did to you, this is the least I can do.” Val took the call to action and grabbed Audri’s hand to pull her from the room, saying “come on!” They ran down the corridor with “zaps” and “crashes” echoing behind them. Until Audri stopped and said suspiciously, “waaaiit a second… why am I following you? How do I know you’re even any good at saving anyone?” Val replied, “if houseplants or relationships are any sign, i’d be skeptical too.”

If you have to go down the drain, it’s best not to be alone, regardless.
Maybe Loomp is a villain after all. He could have arranged for the raid so that the real Thoos and Picknar would have to flee and not get paid. It’s sus that we only see the laser fire and not the raiders.
Loomp didn’t come across particularly self-sacrificing in earlier interactions. I can’t imagine that he’s suddenly developed a strong code of morals. If he’s taking the fall, it’s because it’d go worse for him if he didn’t.
They could be firing from cover. But the fact that they did not announce themselves and are destroying evidence suggests that if they are the law that they are not big on taking them alive or it could be as you said.
I really like having the Alt Text. It sometimes adds some little details not in the artwork…plus it helps me keep straight which one is Val and which is Audri in their Tithoronian forms!
The raid is fake. He’s just trying to get out of paying.
Even fake drains have to empty out somewhere. Where is this one leading?
I’m getting vibes of Back to the Future – Doc Brown completing his time travel machine after stealing plutonium from Libyans. The machine itself breaks several laws of physics as well, with extreme consequences. Makes for great shenanigans – so long as you aren’t a character in the story.
OK, so Audri’s in the more ash-brown body and Val is in the more golden brown one? I had that reversed. I know I’m gonna keep mixing them up as this goes on. Is which is which important to keep track of?
Val has lighter fur. Audri has darker fur. Unless I’m Wrong.
I’m deliberately not going back and looking it up, because I want to see if I can differentiate the two characters based on their personalities alone. Should be fun.
