It’s so imbedded in our culture, isn’t it? That when someone is unconscious you’re “suppose to” slap them gently.

Rodrigo takes off his sunglasses, puts them in the strap of his Speedos, and steps forward in the hot pool to look down at Audri and Val. He says, “come on, we need to help them.” Knox lowers his sunglasses to look, and says, “I suppose you’re right.” They go down, and Rodrigo gently lifts Audri up and out of the water, onto her back on the stones. Knox does the same to Val, and then gently slaps her on the cheek a couple times. Val begins to wake and moans, “nnggggg…” Audri also begins to regain consciousness and says dazedly, “what happened?” Knox replies, “you two fell unconscious, and had begun slipping under the water.” Rodrigo adds, “we pulled you out. Are you okay?” Sitting up, Val replies, “where’d Dr. loomp go?…” And Audri, still on her back and looking up says, “the sky is the wrong color. I’m not sure if that means I’m really okay.” Rodrigo puts his sunglasses back on and says, “well, those are certainly engaging replies.” Knox asks, “which color is the ‘right’ color?”

“Well, when Dr. Loomp said he was going to switch our minds, he didn’t actually say it would be with each other.”
Aha! In the 11/27/23 panel, Loomp clearly did say that “Thoos, your consciousness and thoughts will be in Picknar’s body and vice versa”.
This whole shocking bump in the plot has me flabbergasted! I couldn’t figure out what situation and/or how all the diverse character intros were going to merge into a coherent picture. Now that I know, I am tempted to just go back to bed to snuggle with the dogs and nap. Except I would probably have a daymare about Val and Audri waking up in Thoos and Picknar’s bodies!
I think that I am going to need a second mug of Roulneethdunk (04/23/20) to fully appreciate what’s going on here this morning. And unfortunately, just yesterday, when I precognizantly noticed a full box of Roulneetholes (plain, powdered, and cinnamon), I resisted buying it . . . and now indeed I really wish that I had.
Oh! The Plottening!
Oh – wait, this will be terrible for all involved, won’t it?
OH NO
These alien consciousness understand and speak English. There’s nothing to hint that any of the human bodies here have translator implants. So they must be using their host bodies’ knowledge of the language, and so there’s no telling what other of their hosts’ knowledge they just get to share through the simple fact of using their brains.
So the whole thing might not be consciousness transfer so much as merging.
Plus, they’ve been looking at their rescuers and not screaming and recoiling in terror.
Body movements, too. Val’s posture would be totally unnatural to a Tith body, so they’re not doing the kind of moves a Tith would do. (Of course, having less limbs would be a problem for that anyway.)
Might also be more like when Roland Deschain possessed The Prisoner/Eddy Dean, The Lady of Shadows/Oddeta/Deta/Suzanna & The Pusher/Mortimer(?), from King’s “Dark Tower 2”. Or very similarly, The Dead like Al Capone from Peter F Hamilton’s “The Night’s Dawn” series, including “The Reality Dysfunction” & “The Neutronium Alchemist”. (Those titles alone got me HOOKED).
In both stories, the possessing consciousness pushes DOWN the native consciousness into the bottom of their own subconscious, USUALLY making them totally subservient to the possessor, who is able to tap into exotic energies that the native mind has no resistance to.
But it was never this EASY & automatic to do.
If slapping them gently doesn’t work there is always someone with a baseball bat…
Could have been worse. Could have woken up as some weird conical alien 150 million years ago.
The plot thickens.
(and the thought’s stricken)
Which color is the right color? Unblue.
So, the translator eventually changes the mind to not need it. Best hand waving I can do.
And the device drivers so to speak stay in the body.
So, because mind/body dualism isn’t as much of a thing as we think it is, this sort of switching is probably less total than you’d think.
Like, you’d probably move over memories and personality, but there’s a whole lot more there. Language, unconscious gestures, understanding the pain signals your brain is getting, etc.
In essence, I’m saying the “benefit” of speaking English and so on is probably *more* “realistic,” not less.
