does this qualify as “Dog bites Fish?”
@Frith_R, sure! 🙂
I get everything, but I don’t understand why Choan doesn’t remember that Rudrock is a female coyote.
Well, I don’t remember that either. With your name, I have to suppose you have greater powers of memory than most.
Put me in the “I didn’t remember that either” group~
@Mneme, I don’t recall either. But if I ever accidentally mis-gendered him, do you remember where?
As I remember, the first appearance of Ruddock was October 21st 2019 and then in the strip from the 31st Ruddock says “I was alone, but now I am with an alpha female who is very powerful”. I don’t know how to coyote but it indicates that Ruddock is a boycoyote. (I had to use that word because of because).
I remembered having this conversation before, and I found this page where I, at least, was convinced that Ruddock is, was, and always has been male.
How is sneezing a male trait?
Unless you meant -next- page, where Ruddock says “old boy” in self-reference~
Personally I assumed Ruddock to be male all along, but I -could- have missed a hint otherwise?
I was referring to the Comments section at the link, but I have copied the relevant links to this comment.
In the audio, Christopher said “Emily and the coyote are sitting … She’s leaning aginst a rock and he’s sort of lying up against her …” here: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2019/10/28/102819-your-name/
Ruddock lifted a leg to piddle here: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2020/01/09/010920-kid-kind/
– but this is a behavior sometimes observed in female canids
The author commented “Good boy, Ruddock.” here: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2020/02/20/022020-where-to-wait/
Ruddock, having sniffed Chiphu’s crotch post-surgery, said, “I suddenly no longer have the urge to hump your leg.” here: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2020/03/04/030420-back-at-the-ship/
– but again, this is a behavior observed in some female canids
Ruddock again lifted a leg to piddle here: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2020/04/06/040620-validate-this/
Emily and Pierrot, one very familiar with coyotes and the other an animal lover, both refer to Ruddock as “him” in the last panel here: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2020/08/20/082020-forgiveness/
Nogg said “him” about Ruddock, and Christopher wrote in the Comments ‘”His” actually!”‘ in reference to the correct pronoun for Ruddock here: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2023/06/14/061423-ruddocks-story/
And, of course, Choan said “him” above.
Hmm. I somehow remember assuming Rudrock was male early and getting an idea he was female early on with his (apparently) pack behavior with Emily. But I’m glad there’s been a reasonable about of discussion on this, since it’s -usually- left unstated!
Yeah, I somehow managed to misgender Rudrock early and, particularly since he doesn’t get pronouns often, just kept assuming.
He’s named after Emily’s grandfather, and also if one looks here: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2020/01/13/011320-ahhwwwoooooooooo/ “interant mate” is probably not a Coyote profession for female coyotes, given the logistics of gestation.
Also, this is another indicator (albeit misunderstandable) about Rudrock’s gender: https://www.baldwinpage.com/spacetrawler/2020/03/04/030420-back-at-the-ship which I’d totally missed.
Sure, “hump your leg” is something dogs of all genders do, but if rudrock wanted to hump Chiphu’s leg pre-physical transistion, and lost that urge after the proceedure, well, it certainly means -something-.
I always found Choan’s inappropriate laughter at desperate situations a bit creepy. I see now there is an explanation.
Now we still have to learn the connection between “took down the monarchy” and “started the collapse of society”. Generally I regard taking down monarchies as a positive thing.
It depends on what replaces them!
Sometimes the republic is run by tyrants even worse than the monarchy. Sometimes, no ruling power takes prominence and instead civil war rages for decades until either a new tyrant arises or someone else moves in.
Not every deposed monarchy produces a fully-functioning democracy.
Most communist states started out as collapsed monarchies.
Wait.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!
Choan can reopen the pothole to Emily and Pierrot’s apartment? Then she’s not compelled to use the three coordinates the Bupillions gave her. Which means she could return to either of the two places she’s potholed to already. That greatly expands her freedom of choice and range of action. Much to the loss of everybody concerned.
Not to mention it has allowed the exit of the closest thing Choan ever had to a Jiminy Cricket conscience, not that she ever needed one. Which puts everyone and everything around her at terrible peril, depending on what she wants to do with them. And their technology. And their computer data.
And if Choan is not on a Bupillion guided tour… what did the Bupes intend for her to do with the potholer? Have a moral convulsion on being returned home? NNNNT! Thanks for playing! If the Bupillions had a larger purpose in mind for letting someone they had every reason to know was an amoral megalomaniac have free access to their universe, that purpose is now obscured. She could still show up at their homeworld, for whatever reason, but… that’s just it. What reason does she have to go anywhere? Even back to our Galaxy?
The question of what question she chooses to try and find an answer to now looms much larger. To date, Choan has done as she pleases. What happens when that doesn’t please her any more? What does she do then? Does she even recognize she’s out of worthwhile options? You can only beat your head against an infinitely elastic rubber wall so long before it gets to you. Or does it?
Just signed up for the kickstarter, Chris, and under my hubs’ name (please put my name -if a name is needed- in art/bookplates, etc). James (my husband) would be a bit puzzled over his name ~written in a book!
The shotglass, however, will be a surprise Christmas gift for him. He enjoys my webcomic art merch choices. ????
And for rhe record, there were quite a few discussions over Ruddick’s gender. I always had assumed it was male, but remember being corrected on that, many times.
I do believe that “he” is a “she”!
IMHO
The gender arguments were about Stangor, not Ruddock.
Thank you, @Meran! I made a note of it! 🙂
Hmm. Does Choan “sound” (in text, but you know what I mean) like a different, far ditzier person to anyone else whenever she’s speaking directly about her role in that one incident? Is that coping, shenanigans or just me?
Maybe Ruddock is genderfluid?
