Yeah, I think the symbiont interfered in some way — shapeshifted to Goonth and sacrificed itself, or slipped onto her and protected her from beeing goonified…something. Her sacrificing herself is one thing, but with the missing symbiont, all bets are off.
I have a theory that most of the aliens would be classified as non sentient without the translator technology.

I am more and more convinced that Goonth had a plan, which, despite the obvious, is still somehow operative and working.
What bothers me is that I can see at least two versions of this plan and how they might work out. Neither of which will let me get a good night’s sleep tonight. Oh, the humanity! The stribanity!
