At the new digs in Sandia Park, NM. Wow. That was one of the tougher moves I’ve ever done. But now? Gorgeous place and back to work. All is well.

Oh yes the great magical thinking fear of words which define things they cannot be bad or good.

I’d say that war and rape and robbery and torture talk about terrible things that humans do. But they aren’t swear words.

However using it in everyday language without a reason like fear or anger does become an inhibitory crutch on the speaker.

I met someone like that once. When he had to swear it was sad seeing how those words had lost their emotional punch by over use.

The robots in Freefall have a decency filter that covers indecent sights with black bars.

With so many people around, stun would be the likely setting, to avoid having to deal with all the dead bodies or the responsibility for them or being one of them.

I get it’s a joke, that language filter thing, but still – creepy! Living in a country where people can and do go to jail for using words, terms or even stating non-approved facts…. brrr. You americans don’t know how good ypu have it eith the 1st amendment, I tell you that for free.

As an eritrean, I’m quite sure Tesfay would agree.

I’m not sure where you live, Rikard, but you have my sympathies. Here in the USA we have the First Amendment to protect Freedom of Speech and Religion, but there are powerful politcal and social forces openly trying to destroy that Right, so we’re not without our problems. Only time will tell if reason and sanity prevails against those who seek power above all else.

I’m just trying to imagine what a Zerhakker filter would sound like in Spacetrawler, and I get tangled up in the possibilities of an arcane filler word having a crucial and downright awful meaning in the local language that results in misunderstanding, crosstalk, bad feelings and thrown objects. The joke appeal is obvious, but I can see that arcane filler becoming the local synonym for ‘bad aliens’ or ‘unhygienic aliens’ or any of a dozen other bad traits you wouldn’t want to be known for.

Down this route madness lies. Fun madness, mind you, but the end would still be solid “Duck Soup.” Think I’ll go back to looking at pictures of Tinkertown. What a >>ballooning<< trip.

There were some translation problems with one of the alien races in the game Star Control 2. Their word for fighting came across as “dancing”, along with a few other unfortunate oopsies.
