Reminds me of some of the BS I used to say to avoid accountability in office jobs. Ah, the good ol’ days.

Had a lovely birthday. Went for a long walk, looked at art books in the library, went to studio drawing, and then my sweetie and I went out to dinner. It’s a strange thing, because on your birthday it’s nice to do what you really love, but for me I do that every day all day (writing, painting, drawing), and so I kinda’ had to step sideways and not let myself do any any work (the studio drawing is more a fun thing).

Anyhow. AT studio drawing, I tried working straight on my digital palette. Not sure I love the results.

Tonight (Tuesday), I’m starting staying up until 5:00am, which is when I need to have the script done Friday-night/Saturday-morning for the “24 hour play fest.” If I don’t condition myself a few days in advance, on Friday I’ll turn into a pumpkin at midnight.

02/24/14 Day And Night

2014-02-24_oneway_2kjba

Saturday went to a really fun game night at a friend’s house where we played “Sheepshead” an American (Wisconsin actually) bastardization of Skat. In just the second hand and I (with luck) even almost had a “Grandma’s Hand.” Anyhow, fun to learn a new game, and fun to be able to hold my own (came out one nickel ahead!)

It’s my birthday Tuesday. Been trying to think of something fun to do. Art museum? Bowling? Spend the day painting? Donuts? So many choices.

Excited, this Friday/Saturday is the “24 hour play fest.” Although I’m dreading staying up all night to write — that’ll totally do me in. As I mentioned before: 10 teams of: 1 writer, 1 director, 4 actors each. All teams meets separately February 28th in the evening, the writers write all night, and the director/actors begin rehearsals at 9 in the morning, and the plays go up for one show of all of them back-to-back that following night. If you’re local, come!

02/21/14 Everything Is Fine

2014-02-21_oneway_9sfe2

Had writer’s group last night (Thursday), and it reminded me how much I want to dive back into writing. I have only one more “Girl Genius” to draw (the strips I’ve been drawing run through the end of next week over at Girl Genius). I have been loving LOVING LOVING drawing it, but it takes a LOT of time to draw each page, and so all my side projects have been on hold for the last couple months.

So yeah, there are two novels and a graphic novel I’m “working” on writing. Plus the “Little Dee” script (although it’s currently with my editor as I await feedback). Of course it’s always more than that. I’ve been itching to do some oil paintings. I can barely contain it. But the prep work is slow.

I can say this about winter: it’s fecking cold and grey and slushy and miserable and you just don’t want to leave you house which is exacerbated when you don’t actually HAVE to leave your house because you work at home, BUT you get a whole lot of work done.

Oh, and I just finished reading a small hand-bound book of short stories. Somewhat real? somewhat magical-realism? Lots of beautiful imagery. It’s called “Small Fierce Things” by LJ Moore. It has lovely little illustrations throughout, and is touching and curious and strange. It’s even hand-sewn using fishing net that she found washed up on the beaches of Svalbard (yes, the North Pole!) (which is how I heard of her, through my friendCedra who went on the same trip up north). There’s a sample story from the book you can read here, and you can purchase it here.

I skipped studio drawing today. Not sure if it was even on. It snowed again. It’s that late February time when winter begins to feel oppressive. But then spring is all the nicer, right? Anyhow, here’s a couple drawings I did over the last month. One this winter from our kitchen window, the other from this past summer, of me doing plein air painting with my friends (wearing my happy red sou’wester). I like the contrast in palette and how it gives such a different sense of life and warmth. winter_summer

02/17/14 Dirty Dishes

2014-02-17_oneway_2sgr

My sweetie and I went to a rock & mineral show down in Albany on Saturday. She’s been developing interest in minerals, and I think they’re pretty so I’m happy enough to go along. Other than that, a slow weekend.

I did this little drawing (below) of Jewel who runs Rooster Sanctuary at Danzig’s Roost. If you’re ever looking for a good small non-profit to donate to, where truly ALL their time and effort and money go into taking care of animals who need sanctuary, this is about as legit and down-to-earth as you can get. Really really good people.

Had a lovely reception for my art show opening at Samantha’s Café. Not a big turnout due to the snow storm, but had some lovely conversation with those who did come.

Oh, and Happy Valentines Day. Here’s a doodle for ya! If you’ve got someone, I hope it’s romantic. If you don’t, then you’re not alone in feeling alone, and I send you my most heartfelt sweet wishes. <3

02/12/14 Like An Ape

Another normal Monday and Tuesday for me. Drew a lot. Model Studio drawing is back on, so I did that (haven’t scanned them in yet though). I made potato soup. We made caramel corn. We went and saw “Monuments Men” which was entertaining, and I’m glad it’s out there to bring light to an interesting part of history, but it was a wee bit flat. I wouldn’t mind seeing the no-doubt-very-long cut if it exists.

So, Marvel Comics is repackaging Ms. Marvel, and old superhero, to be  shape-shifting 16 year-old Muslim girl. There’s a drawing group I’m part of, and so we all did a crack at it (one of the wash drawings I mentioned). Mine’s below, but here’s a link to all of them.

Very excited. Here in Glens Falls they’re having a “24 hour play fest.” 10 teams of: 1 writer, 1 director, 4 actors each. All teams meets separately February 28th in the evening, the writers write all night, and the director/actors begin rehearsals at 9 in the morning, and the plays go up for one show of all of them back-to-back that following night.

And I’ve been chosen as one of the writers! What fun!

Had a good weekend. Ran errands, sat around sipping coffee, finish the first draft of the Little Dee graphic novel. Good times.

So, my hands are never idle. This weekend I did some more watercolor drawings (will post in a later blog, I haven’t scanned them in yet). But I also pulled out a piece of soapstone and have begun carving it into a ram. Fun!

02/07/14 In The Bathroom

Had a very nice day of writing. Worked on the script for the upcoming Little Dee graphic novel (due out next year from penguin/Dial). Worked on one of my novels, of which I then brought what I’d done to the local writer’s group I go to — where we sat around talking about writing. Love it. Love it love it love it.

By the way, Hugo nominations are open. If you’re a WorldCon member/attending, and you also feel Spacetrawler is worthy, you have until March 14. Just sayin’

02/05/14 Career Choices

Went to model drawing class, only to find it starts next week! Argh.

Ah well. Ran errands while out — Post office, drug store, office supply store. Drew another Girl genius page. Ate some homemade banana bread (yum!). Called my mom to wish her a belated birthday. Another day-in-the-life.
