I loved “The Aristocrats” because I could tell it was more than half improv, sometimes more obviously so. Sarah Silverman was obviously practiced with her very feminist take on this old, old saw, but you couldn’t say that about Eric Idle, for who the joke was too obviously American to have any traction with European audiences — as he said, they already knew aristocrats would do and did obscene things as a matter of course. The film wasn’t about the joke as much as it was about the performances, some of which were obviously taxing. And then, of course, you have the late Tim Conway’s priceless silent finish. THAT is ART!
